In the small coal mining town of Windber, Pennsylvania, on the East End of town donned “Little Italy,” a small pizza shop has been serving more than just delicious slices for 65 years. D’Arc’s Pizza started as a local Italian market in the Eureka building on Graham Avenue by Italian immigrants.
Today, the shop is a family staple; a business that just accomplished a milestone that we get to talk about on this special 30th Episode of the Pizza Story Podcast as our host, Erica D’Arcangelo, sits down with her father Emery, the second-generation owner of the shop.
The History & Early Beginnings of D’Arc’s Pizza
D’Arc’s Pizza began in 1960, when Pearl Leonardis suggested to Nicolette and Pete D’Arcangelo that they start making pizza for the local factory workers. What started as a simple idea quickly grew into a community staple. The shop became known for its Abruzzi-style pizza, homemade bread, and the warmth of its owners, Erica’s grandparents, who treated every customer like family.
“We learned to cherish each other and love each other,” says Emery D’Arcangelo. “You learned about food, and wine, and drink, and fellowship.”
From the homemade wine known as “Dago Red” to the cherished porkette sandwiches, each dish tells a story of Italian heritage and the love that goes into every meal. The D’Arcangelo family has always believed in the power of food to bring people together. This belief continues to resonate with their customers today, as well as within their family.
Community and Family at D’Arc’s in Windber
D’Arc’s Pizza is more than just a place to eat; it’s a gathering spot for the community. From heartwarming memories of family reunions, late-night gatherings, and the generosity of the D’Arcangelo family, who have always been there to support their neighbors.
“My father would give you the shirt off his back,” said D’Arcangelo. “He just gave and gave and gave to whoever.”
Looking Ahead with the D’Arc Family
As D’Arc’s Pizza celebrates its 65th Anniversary, the family remains committed to preserving the traditions that have made who they are today. With each slice, they honor the past while looking forward to the future. This ensures that the legacy of D’Arc’s Pizza will continue for generations to come.
